In 2015, my husband, mother, and I set off to thru-hike New Zealand’s 3,000-kilometer Te Araroa Trail. 
While this trail would nearly be my physical, mental, and emotional demise, it is also where the idea of Clementine Lemons was borne.
Let’s bypass the thigh-deep mud, torrential rain, and primordial forests of the North Island(the inspiration for Clementine’s journey through Pangier) and begin our story at Ships Cove in the South Island.
